It's nice that Amtrak is giving service men and women a fare break....but the terms aren't the greatest. Military personnel often have to travel on short notice, so setting a booking date of July 9 for August through November travel would, IMHO, narrow the discount window. Instead, Amtrak should set a military rate based on a Pentagon-set annual passenger volume. And, while Amtrak is wheeling and dealing, it ought to extract from the Pentagon some capital funds so the passenger rail carrier can add to its fleet with retro-fitted heritage cars, exclusively for military use. The heritage cars would be quite useful in troop deployments and emergency management situations. Sloan |
