Story is here.A rail interchange project at Target Field in Minneapolis has received $10 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation, U.S. Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Al Franken (D-Minn.) recently announced.
This will be a consolidated transportation center that will ease connections between light rail and Northstar, and of course aid in access from both to Target Field for baseball games. Future rail corridors will use this station as well. But......
Not mentioned is Amtrak, which doesn't serve Minneapolis. It is still unclear whether the Midway Station (located in the western part of St. Paul) will be retained for Minneapolis travelers once the St. Paul Union Depot reopens in downtown St. Paul next year. Without the light rail in between the two cities (not scheduled to open until 2014 at the earliest) Minneapolis will be underserved as a long bus trip will be necessary. To serve the Interchange Station (Target Field) from its current routing, the Empire Builder would have to back in or out.
