New Jersey Association of Railroad Passengers (NJ-ARP), newsletter for December 2011:
Hoboken Terminal returned to its glory days as a railhead/ferry terminal earlier this month when the original ferry slips behind the terminal building were reopened. Five of the six original slips are capable of handling ferries. The walk between trains and ferries will be longer for some, and shorter for others. A recent locomotive that derailed at Montreal's Central Station is identical to the ALP45-DM's ordered by NJ TRANSIT. These dual mode locomotives will bring direct New York Penn Station service to stations now in diesel-only territory. There is added concern about a potential derailment in the tunnels, which could result in a dangerous fuel leak. There have been 7 derailments of NJT's multilevel cars to date, all thankfully minor. The common denominator between all of these incidents was that they occurred at switch-crossovers with #10 frogs. NJ-ARP is monitoring this situation. NJ-ARP reports that the proposed Monmouth-Ocean-Middlesex rail line (MOM) is on a back burner and may not be revisited for 10 years! They stress that now is the time for action. -------------------- Kevin Korell OTOL Board Leader Howell, NJ |
