But how well does Southern California's transit system work for travelers? Is it really practical to ditch your car and ride the rails? To find out, we recently spent four days journeying to the major tourist sites on the subways and trolleys operated by Metro Rail, and the trains run by Metrolink and Amtrak. (But not the buses; that was asking too much.)

Our conclusion: In some cases, as this chart shows, you're still better off in your car. But in a surprising number of instances, riding the rails turns out to be faster, cheaper and easier than driving. Plus, you get the smug satisfaction of speeding past those endless lines of cars creeping along the L.A. freeways at what's euphemistically called "rush hour."
