ABC-TV New York, 6/17/19:

Construction begins on $570 million Penn Station renovation project

MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) -- Workers began construction Monday on a major renovation project at Penn Station.

The project will add a new entrance on 33rd Street and Seventh Avenue and will also widen the corridor and add new information systems and other amenities.

During the construction, the MTA will close some ticket machines and windows.

The latest round of repairs at Penn Station will force New Jersey Transit to divert some trains to Hoboken Terminal starting Monday to reduce the number of trains that normally go through Penn Station.

New York Post,11/11/19

Penn Station renovations will shut down fast food, stores in LIRR concourse

There’s more misery coming for LIRR commuters at Penn Station. In another bombshell from Vornado’s third-quarter conference call, it turns out that the real estate giant will soon shut down all of the fast-food outlets and stores in the part of the LIRR concourse it controls. It’s part of an MTA project to widen, redesign and reconstruct the over-crowded underground passage between Seventh and Eighth avenues.

Some 17 merchants on the concourse’s Vornado-controlled north side — including Shake Shack, two Starbucks branches, Papyrus, Godiva, Pret a Manger and Le Bon Cafe — will be taken “out of service next year for a couple of years,” a transcript of the call revealed. No more pizza or pretzels for commuters on the run.

The shutdowns will start in April, MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan said.

The Federal Transit Man: Moynihan Train Hall at $1.6B and Counting—and Late

OIG-A-2020-014-Moynihan-REDACTED-8.jpg

The Amtrak Office of Inspector General just released a report that revealed cost overruns and project delays for the $1.6 billion Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station New York, currently under construction. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who believes he is the reincarnation of Robert Moses, the “Master Builder,” will not be happy to learn that his promised commitment to open the facility by year-end December 2020 won’t be met.

The Amtrak OIG report is GOVERNANCE: Early Planning and Oversight Deficiencies Led to Initial Program Failures and Continued Risks to the Moynihan Train Hall Program.  It makes for interesting reading, and can be downloaded here:

The report, however, overlooked a few important issues:

New York City’s Moynihan Train Hall will open for Amtrak and MTA Long Island Rail Road service Jan. 1. The $1.6 billion project, which renovated the 100-year-old James A. Farley Post Office Building at 8th Avenue across from Penn Station, wraps up Dec. 31.

The Moynihan Train Hall expands Penn Station’s concourse space by 255,000 square feet or 50%, and is set, Amtrak said, to relieve crowding and improve rider comfort and security. It is named for the late U.S. Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, who represented New York for 24 years and championed the project.

Said Gov. Cuomo: “New Yorkers have known for decades that Penn Station needed to be reimagined—and after years of work, the Moynihan Train Hall will open on time and on budget at the end of 2020.”
