Are Metro trains shaking homes?

WASHINGTON — More than a year after people living along the Green Line in parts of Northwest began complaining that Metro trains might be shaking their homes, Metro has yet to provide any conclusions about the vibrations to the D.C. councilmember who represents the area or those affected by the shaking.

Metro’s preliminary findings will be shared “very shortly,” General Manager Paul Wiedefeld said Thursday.

Some trains are shaking Petworth houses, Metro GM says

WASHINGTON — Metro trains are vibrating some homes in D.C.’s Petworth neighborhood, but Metro believes the shaking isn’t enough to cause structural damage.

The preliminary findings, by a consultant hired to investigate claims of trains shaking houses, come from a letter from Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld to D.C. Councilmember Brandon Todd on the issue.

Vibration studies were conducted in homes near the stretch of the Green Line in question, and, according to Wiedefeld, 10 houses experienced levels above Metro’s self-imposed limits.

The investigation did not, however, indicate Metro’s newest trains were the only culprit. Wiedefeld wrote that two-thirds of the trains which produced elevated vibration levels were older model trains.

Underground Metro Trains Vibrating Homes as They Travel

Residents in some Washington, D.C., neighborhoods said Metro trains are rumbling through their neighborhoods so loudly that their homes are shaking. While they are blaming the newer and heavier 7000 series railcars, Metro said those cars are not the only ones creating a vibrational issue.
