Hello Kevin,

NM Rail Runner Express suspends service
beginning Monday through April 3rd

Rail Runner to join other government agencies in minimizing human contact (Albuquerque, NM – March 16, 2020)

Beginning Monday, March 16th, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express will suspend service through April 3rd.This decision comes as New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham today issued a directive to all state agencies to temporarily adjust, and in some cases suspend, certain functions in order to minimize public health risks in the wake of the COVID-19 public health emergency.

“We must take into account that the Rail Runner carries people up and down a 100-mile corridor through central New Mexico every day”, said Dewey Cave, Executive Director of the Mid- Region Council of Governments. “It is our hope that by suspending service for at least the duration of the declared state of emergency that we help limit people’s exposure to the public health risk created by COVID-19.”

“There is no indication that anyone’s contracted the virus through riding the train, or that we’ve transported anyone who has been infected”, said Terry Doyle, Director of Rio Metro Regional Transit District. “When service resumes, we will of course continue our extended measures of disinfecting and cleaning all train cars.”

While the Rail Runner will not be transporting passengers for the next three weeks, testing and implementation of Positive Train Control (PTC) will continue in the corridor as scheduled. PTC is a $50-million federal safety enhancement designed to prevent train-to-train collisions, high-speed derailments and other catastrophic events on the railway.

There are no plans at this time to suspend or curtail service provided by Rio Metro buses and shuttle services. For the latest information, visit www.riometro.org

Rio Metro Customer Service representatives are available at 866-795-7245 and 505-245-RAIL (7245) from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The Governor’s office is urging New Mexicans who have non-health-related questions or concerns about Covid-19 to call 833-551-0518 or visit www.newmexico.gov , which been developed and is being continually updated as a one-stop source for information.

Greetings!

A Message to Our Passengers

The COVID-19 crisis has severely impacted the way we all live our lives. Even the simple things like going to work, school, shopping or traveling are no longer simple.

We wanted to provide you, our valued passengers and community partners, with an update on the current status of Rio Metro at this time, as well as information on what we’re doing to ensure the safety and security of our passengers.

New Mexico Rail Runner Express
New Mexico Rail Runner Express service has been suspended since March 16, 2020. The decision was made as New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham issued a directive to all state agencies to temporarily adjust, and in some cases suspend, certain functions in order to minimize public health risks.

While the Rail Runner is not transporting passengers at this time, testing and implementation of Positive Train Control (a federally mandate safety enhancement) continues in the corridor as scheduled.

Rio Metro Bus
While most Rio Metro buses remain operational, we have made several temporary adjustments to our bus service in both Valencia and Sandoval Counties.

Out of an abundance of caution, Rio Metro is taking measures to limit the exposure of our passengers and transit staff. These measures include limiting the number of passengers on vehicles, ensuring appropriate social distancing onboard, and enhanced vehicle cleaning including contracting with Stanley Steamer to disinfect all buses every day before they are in service. Rio Metro bus fares are currently suspended until further notice, and protective shields have been installed around drivers to reduce face-to-face interactions between passengers and transit staff.

Pace ABQ Bike Share
Zagster and Rio Metro have suspended all Pace ABQ Bike Share rentals at this time.

Contact Customer Service
Rio Metro customer service is available to answer questions by phone at 866-795-RAIL (7245). Customer service hours have been temporarily adjusted until further notice and are as follows:

  • Monday-Friday: 6 a.m. - 6 p.m.
  • Saturday-Sunday: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Hello Kevin,

Rail Runner Extends Suspension of Passenger Service

The New Mexico Rail Runner Express will extend suspension of passenger service through May 31, 2020 in accordance with the State’s Public Health Orders and Executive Orders.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s Administration is developing industry-specific COVID-Safe Practices for a “phased-in approach” to reopen many of the State’s services and businesses. To support this effort, Rail Runner officials are working with the Administration to develop COVID-Safe Practices to resume NM Rail Runner Express services once it is deemed safe to do so.

“We are working with the Governor’s office to develop COVID-Safe Practices to safely reopen the train for passenger service,” said Terry Doyle, Director of Rio Metro Regional Transit District, the agency which oversees the Rail Runner. “There are a number of protocols we need to implement to ensure the safety of our customers and staff - including how best to support social distancing, stringent sanitation, and other COVID-Safe Practices aboard the train. We also need to give transit service providers that connect with the train time to adjust their schedules to connect with Rail Runner service.”

The Rail Runner Express you see rolling into Santa Fe’s downtown depot is a ghost train.

Still......

Rail Runner Service Remains Suspended

The New Mexico Rail Runner Express passenger service remains suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Rio Metro officials and the Governor’s reopening task force have been working on new COVID-19 operational protocols that will be instituted on the train once service resumes.  The restart of Rail Runner passenger service is directly tied to how well the state is doing in slowing the spread of the Coronavirus. Unfortunately, given the recent rise in COVID cases and for the safety and health of passengers, service will remain suspended until further notice.
