Fast-food fryer causes Union Station shutdown

WASHINGTON - Thousands of inaugural revelers trying to get out of Washington by train were delayed after a fast-food fryer tripped a fire alarm in Union Station.

D.C. fire department spokesman Alan Etter says authorities evacuated the station for about 45 minutes Wednesday after a fryer in the station's McDonald's restaurant overheated and set off an automatic fire extinguisher. The extinguisher released a chemical that can be harmful if inhaled by people with respiratory problems.

This isn't the first time a cooking accident has caused a fire issue. Within the past year there have been two incidents downstairs in the food court (I believe both were at the same restaurant). Union Station has been keeping the fire department busy. This could not have happened at a worse time (other than when Obama himself was in the station for his travels last weekend or for the ball held there Tuesday night).
