The train was crossing the bridge around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday when it gave way and several rail cars fell to the road below near Shermer and Willow roads in Northbrook, which is near the Glenview border. No one was injured, but the bridge deck was destroyed and the railcars dumped their loads of coal onto the street.

Are you referring to a rail car, or an auto on the street underneath the collapsed bridge? Reports I saw just a couple hours ago on TV said that it was lucky that nobody was killed, and that the fact that most of the town was watching a 4th of July parade might have resulted in little or no traffic than usual being underneath that bridge. Of course in any breaking story things unfortunately can change minute to minute.

CBS 2′s Brad Edwards reports Robert Lindner filed the lawsuit in Cook County on Friday, on behalf of his parents, Burton and Zorine Lindner. Their bodies were found Thursday inside a car that had been crushed in the rubble of the July 4th train wreck near the Glenview-Northbrook border.

Money hunting. I fail to see how this is UPs fault if it was a sun kink. Of course we don't know when the last time the line was inspected for a sun kink if it was inspected that day or if it was missed.

A one-page Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) inspection report issued Friday recommends no violations for Union Pacific Railroad (UP) after a derailment Wednesday, July 4 that caused a Glenview bridge collapse that killed two motorists driving below.

UP officials will appear at a public meeting at Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook on Monday, July 16 at 7 p.m. to explain what happened.

A Union Pacific employee reported to a colleague an anomaly with the track shortly before a train derailed on Independence Day, killing a couple who was driving underneath the railway viaduct, the company revealed Monday.

"We had someone who maintained the signal system that had noticed something casually that didn’t look exactly right on the track," said company spokesman Joseph Bateman. "He called the expert in to have a second look to see if it was safe to operate. ... By the time the expert came to take a look, the accident had occurred."

The revelation came during a meeting at Glenbrook North High School between residents and rail officials to discuss preliminary findings in the incident on Shermer Road in the northern suburb.

The last article (above) has UP engineering stating that the track had buckled under the intense heat. yet, at 102 degrees, the temperature is not outside the range you would find in Summer in Illinois. I would ask this column: was this a result of "continuous welded rail," with no place for expansion, or is this also found in segmented rail where the lap joints cannot accommodate rail expansion beyond 100 degrees?

This seems to be a foreseeable event. What is the protocol for running on extra-hot days?

Union Pacific could spend an estimated $10 million to build a new railroad bridge over Shermer Road on the Glenview-Northbrook border, where a train derailment and viaduct collapse on July 4 killed two Glenview residents.

"We certainly understand there is frustration and a lot of other emotions," Glenview President Kerry Cummings said of the derailment and its subsequent impact on the two communities.

Trustees from both villages met Tuesday evening in Glenview to approve a memorandum of understanding among the two villages, Union Pacific Railroad Co. and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
