From Amtrak's website, 2/8/05:

Service Alert: Pacific Surfliner - Service restored between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara February 8

Amtrak resumed all train service between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara on the Pacific Surfliner route February 8.

Alternative bus transportation is being provided to passengers traveling along the Pacific Surfliner route between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. For schedules call 1-800-USA-RAIL. Train service is expected to resume to/from San Luis Obispo, on February 28, 2005.

Pacific Surfliner service north of Los Angeles was temporarily suspended on January 9, 2005 due to weather related track closures on tracks owned by Union Pacific Railroad.

For more information, passengers may call 1-800-USA-RAIL for updates.

A recent article on the impact of the disrupted train service in the area:

The Santa Barbara hospitality industry is being hit hard by nature’s assault on the Pacific Coast’s narrow rail system.

Amtrak, which normally runs six trains along oceanside tracks it leases from Union Pacific Corp., has not been able to operate the line since Jan. 9, when torrential rains rendered a section of the rails impassable.

“Has it hurt that Amtrak can’t get through? I’m sure that it has,” said Tom Patton, general manager of the Ramada Ltd. hotel and president of the Greater Santa Barbara Lodging Association. “Can I quantify that? No.”
