Rail Runner Passenger Service Resumes March 8
 
The New Mexico Rail Runner Express will resume passenger service on Monday, March 8, 2021. Officials of Rio Metro Regional Transit District are following the guidelines set out by the State to reopen commuter rail service on a limited basis.
 
The train will be running on a limited schedule which at this time will not include any weekend service.
 
 
 
Fare Information
Tickets can be purchased online, through the mobile app or onboard the train with a credit or debit card (except American Express). No cash sales at this time.
 
 
 
Ticket Holders
 
  • Monthly train passes purchased prior to service postponement will be valid for 30 days once activated when service resumes. 
 
  • Annual passes will be refunded on a prorated basis.

Face Mask Required
The proper wearing of face masks is required, per federal law. Mask can either be reusable or disposable.
 
 
Bus Connections
Many area transit agencies, including Rio MetroABQ RIDENorth Central RTDSanta Fe Trails, and New Mexico Park & Ride, will continue to provide bus connections to and from the Rail Runner. Please contact the connecting transit agency to confirm the bus you wish to take to meet the train's reduced schedule.

Safe and Healthy Travel
Rio Metro Regional Transit District is taking precautions to ensure public safety, including enhanced cleaning and disinfecting protocols on train cars throughout the day. We appreciate your assistance in keeping our communities safe.
 
Trains will be operating at a 25% capacity (160 seats per train). No food or beverage will be allowed at this time, except personal water bottles.

Passenger Service Returns to Full Schedule 


 

The New Mexico Rail Runner Express will resume its full pre-COVID schedule beginning Monday, May 24th. The Rail Runner reopened for limited passenger service just two months ago after nearly a year-long suspension due to the pandemic. The full schedule will include weekend train service as well.

Fares
Tickets can be purchased:

  • Online
  • Though the mobile app (available for iPhone and Android)
  • Onboard the train with a debit or credit card (except American Express)
  • Cash will be accepted onboard the train.

Ticket Holders
  • If you have a monthly pass that expired after service was suspended on March 15, 2020:
    • Your pass will be valid for 30 days after you activate usage
    • Simply show the ticket agent your previously purchased monthly pass
    • The ticket agent will find you on our list of valid monthly passes and issue you a replacement monthly pass with an updated expiration date
  • Annual passes will be refunded on a prorated basis.

    Rail Runner ridership down 19 percent since March 2021 reopening  

 

 

Passenger travel on the New Mexico Rail Runner Express has declined by 19 percent since the Belen-to-Santa Fe rail service started up again in March 2021 following a year of inactivity brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.
