Amtrak's first motive power purchase was a group of 150 six-axle SDP40F diesel locomotives. The first units entered service in the summer of 1973. These units were plagued with tracking problems, and some freight railroads went so far as to ban them. After just a few years of service, most of the units were traded back to EMD where most of the internal components were used in the construction of new F40s. Amtrak traded 18 SDP40Fs to the Santa Fe in exchange for switchers, and they continued to run for many years in freight service.
This page, arranged by SDP40F road number, provides the F40PHR that received transplanted parts. Four digit numbers under F40PHR are ATSF road numbers.
The nine units indicated by * (618, 625, 627, 631, 636, 637, 641, 646 and 648) were traded in for 401-409, but the unit-to-unit correlation does not appear to have been recorded.
The unit-to-unit correlation for 500, 523, 537, 611, 617, 621, 623, 624, 626 and 642 is not confirmed; likely trade-in numbers shown. These units became F40PHR Nos. 391-400.
