1Two cab-car conversions were planned for extension of Ethan Allen service in 2022. 691 became 90691, was initially not successful, but in late 2023 it became 9750, and 692 became 9751. As of early 2024 reports of up to eight such conversions were circulating, but as of early 2025 the program beyond three units appears questionable. HHP-8 to HHP-8C numbers can be found here.
ROAD DIESELS (Including Leased and Caltrans-Owned Units)
1Equipment previously in this series (e.g., turboliners, GP40s, F40s, etc.) was renumbered. See the P42 Retirement Status page for more details. 2As of 04/01/25, 71 ALC-42s had been accepted, and 72 were on the property. See the Amtrak By the Numbers page for delivery and acceptance dates, as well as out-of-service information. 3These units were rebuilt from the former Go Transit GP40s by NS at the Juniata Locomotive Shops with the same numbers as now: 520-527. 4Owned by Caltrans. 5Further information can be found here. Several of these units were rebuilt by Beech Grove in 2009-2011 to P42 standards through the "ARRA" program. 6An un-specified number of conversions are planned to enable retirement of the former-Metroliner cab cars.
Some Amtrak F40s are still in service elsewhere or preserved.

In conjunction with the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act of 2008 (PRIIA) the Section 305 Next Generation Equipment Committee wrote specifications for a number of different vehicles, including a diesel locomotive capable of reaching sustained speeds of 125 mph. These locomotives are being purchased through various PRIIA and Stimulus grant funds administered by the FRA. The locomotives are owned by individual states, and operate on short distance routes (750 miles or less) under state sponsorship. Illinois (IDOT) is acting as the oversight state for a consortium of Midwest states including Illinois, Michigan and Missouri. Other locomotives are owned by Washington state (WSDOT) and California (Caltrans). These locomotives are similar to ones built by Siemens for the private All Aboard Florida (FEC) route and MARC for commuter lines between Washington, DC, and Baltimore, MD/Frederick, MD and Harpers Ferry, WV, as well as Amtrak's order of 75 new diesel locomotives placed in December 2018.
*Units 2101-2108 reported with "Amtrak California" branding.
Units 2109-2122 reported with "Pacific Surfiner" branding.
**Units 2123 and 2124 are being leased by Caltrans.
